Why do you believe people are poor?

I believe people in America and globally are poor for one or two reasons " the government and by choice".

Individuals who are poor because of the government are those who strive to better themselves. They are either looking for work and cannot find it or they are currently working on low income that barely supports their needs and the government lack to help with education, health care and financially. Individuals who are poor by choice are those who are not trying to establish themselves. They have the ability to get a job and have success and be financially stable but they fail to do so. Commonly known as panhandlers; they depend on others such as other citizens and the government for their complete well being and basic necessities.

Poverty is an important and emotional issue. In today's society, many struggle with incredible poverty and do not have enough money for the food, shelter, and clothing they need for everyday living and are forced to live in "terrible" circumstances beyond their control.

I believe people are poor for many reasons. One of those reasons is because people don't know how to access the resources available to them. For example, I recently discovered a program that paid for post secondary education for individuals over the age of 18 that were either displaced workers or lived below what is considered the poverty level. This program was not advertised. I stumbled upon it looking for another resource.

I think that people also have "mental" issues that hinder there progression above the poverty level. When I say "mental" I don't mean schizophrenia or bipolar (you know the so to speak "medical" conditions) I mean mental blocks that hinder their growth such as depression or low self-esteem. People may not believe that these are big deals, but when your self-image is very low, it's hard to believe that you can get out of a negative situation or that you even deserve to.

I mean there's an infinite reason for people living on the poverty level. No one can choose just one. The question is, can we tackle the issue in a significant way by addressing any of the causes?
